2 text volumes only (lacking atlas). 4to (292 x 230 mm). [4], ix, [11], cciv, 269; [4], 613 pp. Half-titles. Nine engraved views by Byrne, Pye, Woolnoth, Scott, Finden and Middiman after William Westall. Period quarter calf over marbled boards. Vol 1 prelims a little creased and darkened, occasional foxing including to plate margins, one plate with light offsetting from text, long repaired tear to 3U2 (vol 2), sympathetically rebacked.

FIRST EDITION OF "THE MOST OUTSTANDING BOOK ON THE COASTAL NAVIGATION OF AUSTRALIA" (Wantrup). Flinders' voyage was the first circumnavigation of Australia and confirmed that Australia is a continent and Tasmania an island. He provided detailed surveys of the south coast of Australia and of the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north. Flinders' account is a daily log, there is also a lengthy introduction with a history of prior discoveries and an almost as substantial appendix with scientific and botanical observations.
