2 volumes. 8vo (210 x 130 mm). With hand-colored frontispiece, 2 folding maps hand-colored in outline & 8 aquatint plates. Period half calf over marbled boards. Lacking half-titles, some offsetting from plates to facing text and to folding maps, light foxing at ends, light shelfwear, hinges weak, spines heads repaired and some uneven sunning.
Provenance: Sir John Smith (bookplates).

FIRST EDITION. "Caldcleugh's work has great documentary value. An excellent and impartial observer, he describes Rio de Janeiro with great accuracy and studies the social, agricultural, financial and political situation in Brazil. The part referring to the mines in Minas Geraes is of great interest. The first volume contains two very beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro" (Borba de Moraes I).
