[ANSON, GEORGE. 1697-1762.]

A Voyage to the South Seas, And to many other Parts of the World performed From the Month of September in the Year 1740, to June 1744, By Commodore Anson.... London: R. Walker, 1744.
8vo (172 x 107 mm). x, 11-408, [2], 54 pp. Portrait frontispiece; 4 (of 5?) folding engraved plates. Period speckled calf. Moderate toning, old library inkstamps to title and to preface, binding well-rubbed and upper joint cracked.

FIRST EDITION. There were two unauthorized accounts of Anson's voyage published in 1744 with nearly identical text. This edition, however, includes a table for estimating the value of diamonds and more plates, including "a very strange one depicting seals and sea lions on Juan Fernández Island" (Hill p 311). Hill calls for 5 folding plates, but this copy has 4 folding plates plus a frontispiece portrait.
