2 works bound together. 12mo (132 x 73 mm). [xxxiv], 107, [1]; 298 pp. Engraved frontispiece and 36 plates in first work. Early vellum, titles penned to spine. Evenly toned, binding somewhat soiled.
Provenance: New York Institution for the Deaf and Dumb Library (stamp to f.f.e.p.).

FIRST EDITION of the best-known work of alchemist Franciscus Van Helmont, son of chemist Jan Baptista van Helmont, in which he discusses the principle of a rational alphabet and provides an explanation of the method of teaching lip-reading to deaf mutes based upon the study of the Hebrew language since each letter of the alphabet could be articulated.
