TOMLINSON, CHARLES (b. 1927)
PORTRAIT BY JUDITH ARONSON (b. 1942), photograph, silver print, head and shoulders, head characteristically held back, chin thrust forward, lips slightly pursed, signed by Judith Aronson below the image, her label on the verso, framed and glazed, size of image 10 x 13 inches (24 x 33 cm), overall size 15 x 18 inches (39 x 47 cm), Ozleworth Bottom, Gloucestershire, 1985 (printed later)
Judith Aronson recalls: 'A highlight of journeys back to England has always been seeing the Tomlinsons, neighbours and dear friends over thirty years in Gloucestershire. Theirs is the remote life, one that seems especially so because their house sits at the lowest point in Ozleworth Bottom; not until the year 2000 was there a telephone...There the Victorian tradition of reading aloud en famille of an evening, often a Dickens novel. Tea at the Tomlinsons is served from a kitchen hardly changed from the time the cottage was built.' She also quotes Tomlinson's poem 'Against Portraits':
...if there must be
an art of portraiture,
let it show us ourselves as we
break from the image of what we are:
the animation of speech, and then
the eyes eluding
that which, once spoken,
seems too specific, too concluding:
or, entering a sudden slant
of brightness, between dark and gold,
a face half-hesitant,
face at a threshold.
No example of this wonderfully expressive image is in the National Portrait Gallery.
