THOMAS, DYLAN, (1914-1953, Welsh poet)

PORTRAIT BY ROLLIE MCKENNA (1918-2003), AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER, vintage photograph, printed by the photographer, silver print, three-quarter length, standing to the left against the door outside the Boathouse in Laugharne, in profile to the right turned back and looking into the camera, the harbour and hills in the background, photographer's name, address and dated copyright statement written on the verso (438 East 88th St NY), framed and glazed, size of image 7 x 9 inches (18 x 24 cm), overall size 13 x 14 inches (33 x 36 cm), Laugharne 1952, dated 1953

The view from Dylan's desk to the south was where:

Over Sir John's hill,
The hawk on fire hangs still...
Where the elegiac fisherbird stabs and paddles
In the pebbly dab-filled
Shallow and sedge, "dilly dilly" calls the loft hawk,
"Come and be killed...

In the east, in Llanybri across the Taf, he could see the little church about which he wrote:

Pale rain over the dwindling harbour
And over the sea wet church of a snail
With its horns through mist...

PROVENANCE: Obtained directly from Rollie McKenna by the previous owner (Jeff Towns).

REFERENCE: Rollie McKenna, Portrait of Dylan, 1982.
