TENNYSON, ALFRED (1809-1892)

PORTRAIT BY JULIA MARGARET CAMERON (1815-1879), vintage photograph, albumen print, half length and half turned to the right, SIGNED BY TENNYSON ('ATennyson') and INSCRIBED AND DATED BY JULIA MARGARET CAMERON under the image on the original mount: 'From Life Registered copy...Julia Margaret Cameron June 3d 1869. The last photograph of the Laureate', with a pencil note in twentieth-century hand on the verso ', two small marks on the recto, framed and glazed, size of image 14 x 11 inches (36 x 27 cm), overall size 20 x 16 inches (52 x 41 cm), 3 June 1869

JULIA MARGARET CAMERON'S 'LAST PHOTOGRAPH' OF TENNYSON, SIGNED BY HIM, FORMERLY IN THE POSSESSION OF THE TENNYSON FAMILY.

P.H. Emerson considered this photograph to be a 'masterly work, with all the breadth of effect and vigorous simplicity that belongs to great art. Reminds me of Valesquez.'

The present photograph was originally in the possession of the Tennyson family and was sold at Sotheby's Belgravia in 1980 as part of a series of twenty-seven lots sold by order of the Tennyson Trustees. The catalogue entry from that date erroneously described Tennyson's signature on the mount as a facsimile.

PROVENANCE: Tennyson Family; Sotheby's Belgravia, 1980; William Reese.

REFERENCE: P.H. Emerson, 'Mrs Julia Margaret Cameron', Sun Artists, 1890; Mike Weaver, Julia Margaret Cameron 1815-1879, 1984.
