SOTHEBY'S INTERNATIONAL POETRY COMPETITION 1982

GROUP OF SIX PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY AN UNKNOWN PHOTOGRAPHER AT THE PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY IN THE AEOLIAN HALL IN 1982, vintage photographs mostly of the judges including, Basil Bunting (3 images), Stephen Spender (2), Gwendolyn Brooks (3), George Barker (1), Michael Baldwin (1), also with John Heath-Stubbs, Roy Davids, Felix Pryor and others, mounted together, framed and glazed, sizes of images (4) 6 x 8 inches (14 x 20 cm), (2) 8 x 6 inches (20 x 15 cm), overall size 28 x 23 inches (71 x 50 cm), London 1982

The competition, organised by Roy Davids on behalf of Sotheby's, was one of the first major international poetry competitions with substantial prizes, the first five prizes funded by Sotheby's being from £5,000 to £1,000. The private bankers Duncan Lawrie Ltd funded twenty prizes of £250 each and the Arvon Foundation, on whose behalf the competition was run, funded ten prizes of £100 each. An Anthology made up of poems submitted to the competition was published in 1984.
