SMITH, SAMUEL FRANCIS (1808-1895, American poet and hymn-writer)

PORTRAIT BY A. N. HARDY OF 523 WASHINGTON STREET, BOSTON, vintage photograph, albumen cabinet card, head and shoulders slightly turned to the left, SIGNED TWICE BY SMITH AND INSCRIBED ON THE VERSO BY HIM WITH THE FIRST THREE LINES OF 'AMERICA', signed once on the recto and once on the verso ('S.F. Smith') and with the dates when taken and when inscribed, and with photographer's name and address on the recto and verso, framed and glazed on the front and back, size of image. 7 x 5 inches (18 x 12 cm), overall size 14 x 11 inches (36 x 28 cm), taken in Boston, 1 February 1882; inscribed and signed 11 October 1894

RARE: any photographs of Smith are rare; those signed and inscribed with lines from 'America', are even more so.
