AUTOGRAPH DRAFT OF A POEM OR POETICAL QUIP 'DR PRETTYMAN'S REVENGE AGAINST SLANDER', possible alternative title 'Dr Prettyman's Pater Noster', 7 lines, one related trial below and overleaf, about 20 lines in all, some scored through preserving reconsidered readings, scansion markings, inscribed 'R.B. Sheridan's hand writing given to me by T [? J].W. July 7th 1828. W Bartholomew', 2 pages, small quarto, vestiges of inlaying, not dated

William Bartholomew, a chemist, violinist and painter of flowers, married the singer Ann Mounsey, for whom he translated or provided texts for her song. He undertook an English adaptation of Elijah. George Pretyman (1750-1827), later Bishop of Lincoln and of Winchester, was one of William Pitt the Younger's most important advisers.

RARE AND PROBABLY UNPUBLISHED: not in Dramatic Works and Poems, 3 volumes, edited Cecil Price, 1966, The Letters, 2 volumes, edited by Cecil Price, 1973 or The Plays and Poems, 3 volumes, edited by R. Crompton Rhodes, 1928.

No poetical manuscripts by Sheridan have been sold at auction in the last forty years at least.
