PREWETT, FRANK (1893-1962, Canadian poet, as 'Toronto')

PORTRAIT BY DOROTHY BRETT (1883-1977), oil on canvas, head and shoulders slightly turned to the right, identified, dated and attributed on the verso BY SIEGFRIED SASSOON ('Frank Prewett by Dorothy Brett. 1923'), modern frame, with cut out in backing board to reveal inscription, size of image 12 x 9 inches (31 x 23 cm), overall size 14 x 10 inches (36 x 27 cm), 1923

Dorothy Brett, the daughter of Lord Esher, was associated with the Bloomsbury group. In 1924 she joined D.H. and Frieda Lawrence in New Mexico where she remained for the rest of her life. It is known that Brett drew Prewett and that Carrington painted her, but the existence of a painting by Brett has gone unrecorded. Sassoon was much taken with Prewett. There are no portraits in oils of Prewett in the National Portrait Gallery.

PROVENANCE: Siegfried Sassoon; George Sassoon.
