MOORE, MARIANNE (1887-1972, American poet)

PORTRAIT BY GEORGE PLATT-LYNES (1907-1955), vintage photograph, silver print, half length, face slightly turned to the right, looking into the camera, wearing her trademark tricorn hat and cloak, partly backlit, with the photographer's name and address on the verso, framed and glazed, size of image 9 x 7 inches (23 x 18 cm), overall size 14 x 12 inches (36 x 30 cm), New York, undated

This iconic image of Moore was used, for instance, on the dust-jacket of A Marianne Moore Reader.

The present example derives from Monroe Wheeler and Glenway Wescott who were close friends of Platt-Lynes, as described in When We Were Three: The Travels Albums of George Platt-Lynes, Monroe Wheeler, and Glenway Westcott, 1925-1935, 1968.

In her poem 'When I buy pictures', Marianne Moore ended:

'...It comes to this: of whatever sort it is,
it must be "lit with piercing glances into the life of things;"
it must acknowledge the spiritual forces that have made it.'
