MASEFIELD, JOHN (1878-1967)

PORTRAIT BY THE AMERICAN ARTIST SAMUEL JOHNSON WOOLF (1880-1948), charcoal drawing heightened with white, head and shoulders, BOLDLY SIGNED BY JOHN MASEFIELD and also signed by the artist, framed and glazed, size of image 17 x 13 inches (43 x 33 cm), overall size 28 x 23 inches (72 x 59 cm), [America, 1933]

Masefield was on a lecture tour in America in 1933 when he sat for Woolf. This portrait was reproduced in the New York Times Magazine on 22 January 1933. It was also used by June Dwyer for the dust-jacket of her study of Masefield in 1987. Philip Errington generously assisted in providing information about the portrait.
