MACCAIG, NORMAN (1910-1996. Scottish poet)

PORTRAIT BY CHRISTOPHER BARKER (b. 1943) photograph, silver print, half length, head three-quarters turned to the left, framed and glazed, size of image 16 x 12 inches (42 x 32 cm), overall size 22 x 18 inches (57 x 47 cm), 1946 (printed later)

This fine portrait was taken for and used in Christopher Barker's Portraits of Poets, 1986. Christopher Barker writes: '...he had a very noble profile...After climbing the never-ending staircase of a substantial Georgian building in Edinburgh, laden down with photo equipment, I was let into a sunlit book-lined flat at the very top...The sharpness of his craggy features would be well set off with the available direct sunlight...He was a charming and courteous sitter...'

PROVENANCE: Christopher Barker.
