Footnotes

The sitter was the last Nawab of Oudh (in power from 1814 to 1818), and was subsequently made the first King of Oudh (1818-27) by the East India Company. The present painting would appear to date from before 1818 since the Nawab is not wearing a crown. For another depiction see S. C. Welch, Room for Wonder: Indian Painting during the British Period 1760-1880, New York 1979, no. 41; and T. Falk & M. Archer, Indian Miniatures in the India Office Library, London 1981, no. 345.
