A gem-set gold Box
India, 19th Century

of circular form, the body with three rows of small emeralds in raised circular gold settings, gold dots in the interstices, separate domed lid similarly set with a row of blue sapphires and two rows of rubies, containing a small red lentil bearing an inscription in naskh
2.3 cm. high, 42g.

Footnotes

The inscription comprises an invocation to the Imam Mahdi (ya qa'im al-i Muhammad).
The box was probably a votive offering to an imambara.
