A Vizagapatam ivory, tortoiseshell and ebony overlaid sandalwood Work Basket, a gift from Muhammad Ali Jinnah
South India, circa 1910

with two sloping hinged lids with loop handle, on four claw feet, the lids each with a cartouche depicting a seated figure of Vishnu within a pierced foliate panel, the borders and side panels similarly decorated depicting the goddess Parvati, the borders and handles with a vine bearing flowers
30 x 22.5 x 27 cm.

Provenance: A gift to Sir Basil Scott (former Chief Justice of Bombay) and Lady Scott (nee Villiers-Stuart of Dromana, Co. Waterford) from Muhammad Ali Jinnah (1876 - 1948), founder of Pakistan and first Governor General from Independence to his death on 11th September 1948; and thence by family descent.

This box was given to Sir Basil Scott by Jinnah on the occasion of his wedding on 29th December 1914.
