Footnotes

There are earlier examples of the same subject dated c.1650 in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no. A.38-1921 and A.27-1984.
Many religious carvings such as this were commissioned by the Portuguese in their colony of Goa on the west coast of India. Christ as the Good Shepherd on the Mount is a common subject in Indo-Portuguese ivories and particular to Goan ivories.
