of pointed form, carved in the round, the front with winged bird-headed deity sitting astride a multi-headed naga, with three further pairs of naga heads on either side, the reverse with upturned tail, mounted on stand

Banteai Kdei was one of the major projects undertaken during the nearly forty year reign of Jayavarman VII (1181-1219). For a 19th century drawing of an almost identical Garuda from Banteai Kdei see Madeleine Giteau, Khmer Sculpture, London, p. 175.
