Qajar Persia, second half of the 19th Century

Arabic manuscript on paper, 253 leaves, 17 lines to the page written in elegant naskhi script in black ink with diacritics and vowel points in black and red, gold dots between verses, inner margins ruled in gold, catchwords in outer margins, sura headings written in thuluth script in red ink, double-page illuminated frontispiece preceded by 12 pages of prayers, text written horizontally and diagonally in naskhi script within cartouches and panels outlined in gold, cornerpieces decorated with floral motifs in blue and gold, splits to margins crudely repaired, corners rather thumbed, some soiling, black leather gilt, worn, doublures and flyleaf of marbled paper, stamp impressions of Customs officers dated 1317 shamsa 5, birth announcement written in a cursive script and dated between AH 1301/AD 1883-84 and AH 1320/AD 1902-03
