A small illuminated Qur'an
Qajar Persia, dated Muharram 1258/1842-43

Arabic manuscript on cream-coloured paper, 188 leaves, 22 lines to the page written in minute naskhi script in black ink with diacritics and vowel points in red and black, gold dots between verses, inner margins ruled in blue and gold, catchwords, illuminated devices in wide outer borders, sura headings written in thuluth script in red on gold cartouches incorporated into illuminated rectangular panels, one double-page illuminated frontispiece in colours and gold, some defects with loss of small areas of illumination crudely repaired, some waterstaining affecting small areas of text, red lacquer binding decorated with gilt floral motifs, crackled, crudely rebacked and repaired
96 x 62 mm.
