Footnotes

For a fragment of comparable design from the Umayyad palace of Madinat al-Zahra near Cordoba, see Arte Toledano: islamic y mudejar, Madrid, 1973, pl. LXIX. This bevelled style of carving relates to the carved stucco work from Umayyad Syria, for example from the 8th Century Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi (Les Andalousies de Damas a Cordoue, Paris, 2001, pp. 26-7, no.2).
