Footnotes

The construction of the Mosque of Suleiman in Damascus (1554-60), contemporary with that in Constantinople, caused an upturn in the production of Syrian tiles, which had clear affinities with those produced at Iznik. Designs were similar, but Syrian tiles were notable for their lack of raised red pigment.
