An unusual Iznik pottery Dish
Turkey, late 16th Century

with wide sloping rim, decorated in polychrome and gilt, the centre with a hyacinth spray flanked by tulips, the rim with a frieze of tulips alternating with saz leaves

Amongst the repertoire of Iznik shapes, dishes with wide sloping rims are rare. Comparison of the shape of this piece can be made with a dish formerly in the collection of Sir Thomas Barlow (Atasoy, Nurhan and Julian Raby, Iznik: The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, fig. 592).
