Footnotes

Tiles of this type would have originally formed part of a much larger continuous border, which would have framed an inner floral design to the wall of a mosque or a palace.

A group of tiles of similar design can be seen in the Cinili Kiosk Museum at the Topkapi Palace, Istanbbul (Gonul Oney and Banri Namikawa, Turkish Ceramic Tile Art, 1975, nos. 99-103); and another group with red ground trefoils, can be seen in the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection, Lisbon (Maria Queiroz Ribeiro, Iznik Pottery and Tiles in the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection, Lisbon, 2009, p. 121, no. 72).
