A Safavid engraved silver-gilt bazuband Amulet Case
Persia, 17th Century

of circular form with slightly convex hinged lid with fastening hook of foliate form and two hinged lugs of circular form decorated in openwork with palmette motifs, engraved with a central roundel containing five lines of inscription in naskhi surrounded by a frieze of scalloped semi-circular motifs surmounted by palmettes, the edges with a band of inscription filled cartouches, the reverse with a magic square surrounded by inscription
5.2 cm. diam.

Inscriptions: on the lid, The Call to God to bless the 'Fourteen Innocents'; around the box, Qur'an, chapter CXII (ikhlas); on the reverse, Qur'an, chapter XXIV (al-nur), verse 35, with talismanic numbers in the centre.
