Provenance: The coins were purchased from the Government Museum, Madras in 1936 by Chas. W. Bewley Esq., grandfather of the owner's husband, who was employed with the Victoria Insurance Company in India. Possibly made into jewellery set in Madras and subsequently inherited by present owner.
The lot is accompanied by a letter from the Superintendent of the Government Museum in Madras confirming purchase of coins and stating that the coins belong to a treasure trove which was recovered from the village of Kodur in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, South India. The coins are dated to the 13th century and belong to a Telegu Choda chief. The Telegu Chodas of Nellore ruled over parts of Andhra Pradesh from the 11th to the 13th Centuries.
