Footnotes

The rudraksha bead (stone of the fruit of the utrasam tree) is sacred to Shiva. The name means "eye of Rudra", an archaic name for the god. The beads are used in rosaries, but are also worn as necklaces and sometimes bracelets by Shaivite devotees and priests. The stone in its commonist form is a five-faced form of the god and beads with different numbers of sections are highly valued, each number having its own symbolic associations.
