Qajar Persia, 19th Century

Persian manuscript on lacquered paper laid down on board, text in nasta'liq script in black ink on a brown ground with intertwining floral motifs in gold, all within a lobed cartouche, buff borders, blue margin rules, unframed
each 350 x 585 mm.(12)

Footnotes

Eight of the panels bear verses from a long poem of Muhtasham Kashani (d. 1587-88) on the events and martyrs of Karbala. The remaining four bear similar verses by Sabahi Bidgoli (d. circa 1803-04).
