Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (born in Khorasan in 1058) was one of the foremost mediaeval authors on the subject of theology and law and the integration of the two. His best-known work was Ihya' 'ulum ad-Din, The Revival of the Religious Sciences, of which the present volume forms around one quarter. The volume al-Munjiyat, The Ways of Salvation, discusses subjects including forgiveness, hope, honesty and reflection. The Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, has at least nine copies of Ihya' 'ulum ad-Din: see A. Arberry, A Handlist of the Arabic Manuscripts, Dublin 1956, vol. II, p. 45, no. 3353; see also Brockelmann, GAL, I.422, suppl. I. 748.
