Footnotes

Provenance: Frank Linville Collection, Malter Sale XXXIX, 2 April 1989, 128, ill.

Three line inscription:
amara al-Amir/ Yazid ibin Khatim/ 'ala yaday Salama
"Ordered the Amir/ Yazid b. Khatim/ at the hands of Salama (horizontal arrow at end of inscription)"

Seven specimens published (mostly fragments). Miles (1971, 32, ill.) is a near intact (417gr.) specimen of this type. See also Morton (1985 p. 102, 245) who states, "it appears that the only other denomination yet known in this series of Yazid and Salama is the ratl... all from one die...". This fragment is a fragment of a ratl called the Umayyad ratl (approx. 440gr.) by Balog (1976, p. 10-23). A.H. Morton (1985, p. 31) re-examined all Balog's sources and gave correct metrologic values and an accurate chronology (Balog gives wrong dates for the 'Abbasid ratl). For further use of Salama, see the following Lot.
