Footnotes

Provenance: Sotheby's, 7 April 1985.

Two line inscription:
al-wa-/ fa'li-llah
"Hones-/ ty to God".

Intact measures are very rare, less than twenty at all. The very small size is not a problem as small measures have been published (e.g. Miles 1951, pl. III, height 34mm.). The absence of any patina, and especially the fact that the stamp colour is not exactly the same at the bottle's one are unusual.

A note by A. H. Morton reads "Genuine Umayyad piece or modern fake?".
