28mm. diam., 4.29gr.

Footnotes

Provenance: Bought from S. Album List 35, 242.

Similar to an example in the Collection of Henri A. Awad (see Bacharach and Awad, 1981, 6).

Inscription:

li-'A[b]d al-'Az-/iz al-Amir/mizan wafin
"Of 'Abd al-'Az-/iz, the Amir/weight, full-weight"

A.H. Morton published this dinar-weight in BSOAS, 1986, 2. It bears obvious similarities with a dinar-weight in the name of 'Abd Allah b. Marwan already published (Morton, 1985, 1; and one other example in this collection, see the following Lot), but is an earlier stage.

This weight is the oldest Egyptian dated glass weight known. Morton's article in BSOAS discusses many aspects of this attribution.
