A rare carved bone Molar Flask
probably Egypt, 9th/10th Century

of roughly square faceted form rising from a tiered foot to a stepped shoulder and narrow neck widening at mouth, carved to body with angular abstract designs
8.7 cm. high

Footnotes

The shape of this bone flask is based on molar flasks in glass that have been found in Egypt, Persia and Mesopotamia, all dating to the Medieval period. Closest comparison of form of the body and decoration can be drawn with a bottle in the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, attributed to Egypt (Stefano Carboni, Glass from Islamic Lands, London, 2001, p. 128, cat. 2.30d).
