Four Safavid tinned-copper Bowls
Persia, 17th Century

the first of deep form on a short foot with flaring rim, profusely engraved in champlevé with a lattice design, the interstices with palmettes, the rim with a band of inscription, traces of black inlay; the second of deep rounded form on a short foot with flaring rim, engraved with diagonal bands containing scrolling floral vines, the rim with inscription; the third of rounded form on a flared foot engraved in champlevé with two bands of roundels on a ground of floral interlace, the rim with cartouches containing inscription interspersed by cartouches containing floral interlace; the fourth of shallow rounded form with flaring rim, engraved with floral and foliate motifs, the base with a roundel surrounded by a band of inscription-filled cartouches

Inscriptions:
1. Two Persian couplets, one by Jami and another attributed to Hafiz.
Owner's name as: 'Its owner Khwaja Dad, year 1101 (1689-90)'
Under the base, incised: 1023 or 1523 [not a date].
2. Two Persian couplets and owner's name as: 'Its owner Khwaja Husayn Saqqa (The water vendor)'.
3. A Persian quatrain by Salman Savaji (d. 778/1376) often attributed to Omar Khayyam and owner's name as: 'Its owner Ahmad Kamal'.
4. Two Persian couplets. The first couplet is seen on a torch stand in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Melikian-Chirvani,Iranian Metalwork, London, 1982, p. 341) and the second on a wine-bucket, also in the V&A (438-1876)(Melikian-Chirvani, 1982, no. 115).
