An engraved brass Dish and tinned copper Dish
India or Turkey, 17th Century

of shallow rounded form with everted rim, profusely engraved with a central roundel containing a flowerhead surrounded by a band of inscription and a further band of stylised palmettes on a ground of geometric design, the rim with foliate vines; and a similar Ottoman tinned copper bowl with maker's mark

Footnotes

Provenance: Christie's 22 April 1995, Lot 107/11.

Inscription: 'Nahhas' (a worker in brass or a coppersmith).

The above lot illustrates Morton's taste in collecting. These pieces were purchased separately but clearly are related in their almost identical form. In design, the heavy brass example blends both the large script of Golconda 16th and 17th Century vessels with an Ottoman style split-palmette.
