An engraved brass Ewer
North India or Deccan, 16th Century or earlier

of 'kettle' shape with spiral-fluted bulbous body, on circular stepped foot, with serpentine spout terminating in an upturned flower-head, curved handle with a rectangular opening in the centre with everted rim, missing lid, decorated to foot with band of lappets, to body with scrolling leaves engraved in alternate flutes, to neck with floral motifs within arches between narrow bands of lappets, to spout and handle with scrolling foliate motifs

This ewer represents one of the 16 Indian examples of this early shape identified by Zebrowski which evolved in Persia and India during the 15th and 16th Ccenturies. An almost identical "kettle" ewer in a Private Collection, with the same type of vegetal engraving to the diagonally spiralling ribs, handle and spout is illustrated and dated to the 16th Century or earlier (M. Zebrowski, Gold, Silver and Bronze, London, 1997, no 206, p. 155).
