VOYAGER II.
The Great Red Spot, around July 3, 1979, 2 very large chromogenic prints mounted together on wood board, 71½ x 71½ inches (1820 x 1820 mm) overall.
THE BACKDROP FOR JPL PRESS CONFERENCES FROM THE LATE 1970S TO THE EARLY 1980S. This photograph hung at JPL in Pasadena for many years, a symbol of their achievements. Jupiter's best-known feature, the Red Spot is a storm known to have been in existence since at least 1831 and possibly since 1665. Even before Voyager proved that the feature was a storm, there was strong evidence that the spot could not be associated with any deeper feature on the planet's surface, as the Spot rotates differentially with respect to the rest of the atmosphere, sometimes faster and sometimes more slowly.
