A jade 'peach and bat' carving

Early Qing dynasty
The attractive pale green boulder with russet inclusions, naturalistically worked in the form of two succulent peaches issuing from a gnarled leafy stem, all boldly worked in high relief, each with an indented centre, the composition skilfully incorporating the natural russet streaks of the stone into the composition of the peaches, with a bat depicted feasting on one of the fruit, wood stand.
16.4cm wide.

Lord Rolf Cunliffe collection
Bluett & Sons Ltd., London

Lord Rolf Cunliffe (1899-1963) was a prominent mid twentieth century English collector of Chinese ceramics and works of art. Bluett & Sons Ltd handled a substantial part of his collection in the 1970s and 1980s, with the remainder sold in our London rooms on 11 November 2002.
