A spinach jade incense burner and cover

Mid Qing dynasty
The sturdy vessel intricately worked on the exterior with double lotus blossoms amidst leafy scrolls within vertical cartouches, rising from a splayed foot and flanked at the sides by a pair of chrysanthemum handles suspending loose rings from leafy stems, all beneath a domed cover surmounted by a heavily compressed circular knop with chrysanthemums worked in reticulation, the stone of a rich dark green colour.

清中期 碧玉雕纏枝牡丹蓋爐

碧玉質地,深綠色中略有黑色斑紋。器身圓形,高蓋圓鼓,子母口,蓋鈕鏤雕纏枝牡丹,蓋身八出戟間飾卷草牡丹紋,圓形圈足外撇。器身與蓋身對應亦作八出戟,並間飾卷草牡丹紋,器身兩側各飾一菊花耳,四周透雕卷草紋,耳下套一活環。圈足外壁對應八出戟,出戟間飾十字花卉卷草紋。

此器於1994年5月3日從美國亞洲藝術商The Jade Collector購入,造型古樸,雕琢精湛,紋飾多有仿古之風。另見一件類似的清康熙碧玉雕牡丹紋香薰,著錄於Stanley C. Nott編,《Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages. A Review of Its Characteristics, Decoration, Folklore and Symbolism》,東京,1962年,頁57,圖版XLII。又Roger Kevern編,《Jade》,倫敦,1991年,頁163,圖版89,其中著錄一件18世紀碧玉出戟饕餮紋香爐可作對比參考。參見Jessie Woolworth Donahue舊藏一件清乾隆碧玉饕餮紋牡丹耳三足香爐,曾於波士頓藝術博物館展出,後於1972年4月20日紐約蘇富比拍賣,拍品264號,再於2007年11月27日香港佳士得拍賣,拍品1549號,該器亦採用八出戟設計,其紋飾佈局均與本香爐類似。
