A Very Rare Guidon Of The 3rd Squadron, Fifeshire Fencible Cavalry
1794 To Circa 1800

Single-sided and of ivory-coloured silk, painted in polychrome and gilt with various national and regimental emblems, comprising a crowned oval strap inscribed 'Fifeshire Fencible Cavalry' and enclosing the royal cypher 'G III R', sprays of oak leaves in three-quarter surround with oval pendent medallion beneath suspended from a blue ribbon and bearing the number '3', all centred on four evenly spaced panels, two displaying Union sprays of rose and thistles, and two displaying the White Horse of Hanover, all within gilt foliate frames (some damage and restoration)

Footnotes

The Fencible Cavalry and Infantry were all raised in 1794 in response to the success of the French Revolutionary armies and the reverses suffered on the Continent by the Allied forces. Fully paid by the Government they were liable for service throughout mainland Britain and Ireland. All regiments were disbanded or absorbed between 1799 and 1801
