Footnotes

The 26th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers (Cyclists) were formed in 1888, the first of many such cyclists units. Gilbertson Smith was a long serving officer of the Corps being Captain 23 July 1892, Major 2 November 1896, Major Commandant 20 February 1904 and Lieutenant Colonel 1 April 1908. In 1909 he received the Territorial Decoration. He retired from the Active List on 16 April 1913 and was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 25th (C. of L.) Cyclist Battalion, The London Regiment. The first official document signed by his successor was the letter of recommendation for 'Lieut. Col. Gilbertson Smith, T.D. to be Honorary Colonel. Gilbertson Smith resumed harness at the outbreak of war, and is now in command of the second battalion'. A portrait of Col. Sir Gilbertson Smith TD, DL, by Maurice Frederic Codner, is in the collection of Essex County Council
