A Rare Pair Of Cased 25-Bore D.B. Flintlock Carriage Pistols
By S. Brunn, No. 55 Charing Cross, London, Circa 1800

With rebrowned twist sighted barrels signed in full along the breeches, each breech indistinctly stamped 'Twisted' beneath, engraved with a line of foliage at the rear and with a gold-lined touch-hole, foliate engraved tangs each decorated with a starburst in the sighting groove, signed border engraved flat bevelled locks each decorated with a small trophy on the stepped tail, engraved safety-catches, foliate engraved cocks (two old replacements), rainproof pans and rollers, highly figured half-stocks with rounded butts cut with characteristic pineapple chequering, steel border engraved D-shaped trigger-guards each with a trophy and foliage on the bow and large pineapple finial, border engraved butt-caps each with retaining screw centred on a flower-head, rear ramrod-pipes en suite with the trigger-guard finials, vacant silver escutcheons, and original horn-tipped ramrods, one with iron worm (some rust patination, the mounts lightly reblued): in original relined and fitted case with accessories including three-way powder-flask covered in red leather (some wear and damage), bright mainspring-clamp and oil bottle with octagonal body, turnscrew and ramrod, the interior of the lid with maker's illustrated trade label, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle, London proof marks

Samuel Brunn was Gunmaker to the Prince of Wales from 1800 to 1811, and to the Prince Regent from 1812 to 1820. He took over John Knubley's business at 7 Charing Cross on his death in 1795 and continued as John Knubley until 1797. From 1798 to 1804 Brunn worked under his own name as 'Sword Cutler & Gunmaker, Opposite the Mews, 55 Charing Cross', and from 1805 to 1820 is recorded at 56 Charing Cross
