A Cased Pair Of 18-Bore D.B. Flintlock Carriage Pistols

With rebrowned two-stage twist sighted barrels, octagonal breeches each stamped 'Stubbs Fine Twisted' beneath, and with later Hyderabad arsenal mark along the left breech flat, border engraved breeches engraved with a starburst and 'London' along the rib, border engraved tangs each decorated with foliage and with a starburst in the sighting groove, signed border engraved flat bevelled locks each with semi-rainproof pan and roller, stepped tails each engraved with a starburst, figured half-stocks (one fore-end with minor repair) with chequered rounded butts, large border engraved trigger-guards each decorated with a martial trophy on the bow and with pineapple finial, foliate engraved rear ramrod-pipes, vacant silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, and original horn-tipped ramrod (the other replaced, some wear and minor rust patination): in later well-made lined and fitted case with some accessories including three-way powder-flask, the body covered in burgundy leather (worn), the exterior of the lid with flush-fitting brass carrying handle, London proof marks

The maker is probably John 2 Gill who is recorded as making springs for Miller's flying machine in around 1783 and who was Contractor to Ordnance for swords, firearms and ironmongery. He died in 1801
