A Cased Pair Of Large 32-Bore Flintlock Box-Lock Pocket Pistols
By H.W. Mortimer & Co., London, Gun Makers To His Majesty, Circa 1800

With turn-off barrels each engraved with a band of foliage at the breech, border engraved actions signed on a scroll involving foliage, a drum and a shield on one side, and inscribed 'Gun-Makers To His Majesty.' in an oval against a martial trophy and foliage on the other, engraved thumbpiece safety-catches also locking the steels (one replaced), blued steel-springs and folding triggers, and figured flat-sided butts (one top jaw and screw replaced, some light rust patination overall): in later fitted case lined in plum velvet with some accessories including powder-flask and barrel-key, the interior of the lid with reproduction maker's trade label, the exterior with shaped vacant brass escutcheon, one side of the case cut with a compartment for the case key (sliding cover and key missing), London proof marks

Harvey Walklate 2 Mortimer was apprenticed to his father in 1791. He was in partnership with his father and uncle as H.W. Mortimer, Son & T. Mortimer between 1800 and 1806, with his father as H.W. Mortimer & Son from 1806 to 1813 and on his own account as a gunmaker at 89 Fleet Street from 1814 to 1816, the year of his retirement to Algar House, Fersfield, Norfolk
