A Turkish Shamshir
The Blade Dated 1280 A.H. Corresponding To 1863 A.D.

With curved single-edged blade (some scattered light pitting) cut with a shallow fuller for most of its length along both sides bordered by a narrower fuller along the back, the point cut with a panel on each side in the shape of a trident, the forte on one side chiselled with a panel containing Qur'anic verses in thuluth script, the border retaining faint traces of gold-damascening, and on the other with a cartouche containing a name of God 'Ya Quahdi al-Hajat' in thuluth script, above a circular panel chiselled with a stylised lion, all with traces of etched decoration originally gold-damascened, hilt comprising border engraved white-metal quillon-block (loose) with pointed langets and bud-shaped quillons, foliate engraved silver grip-strap (partly detached) and rounded rhinoceros horn grips, the pommel pierced for a sword-knot (silver mount missing from one side)
