A Very Rare 18-Bore Sartoris Patent Breech-Loading Flintlock Carbine
By Anthony Farindon Biven Of London, No. 5, Circa 1822-5

With russet browned twist two-stage sighted barrel, the rear section rotating against two bayonet fittings in the fore-end and mounted with a spring-loaded folding lever on the left engraved with a garland of foliage and allowing the barrel to slide forward for removal and releasing the sprung upward pivoting chamber, the chamber rectangular becoming polygonal, stamped with maker's initials 'A.F.B.' beneath and finely engraved with a gundog and gamebird in a landscape along the top flat, large touch-hole with platinum-lined internal vent to the chamber, foliate engraved tang with a starburst on the raised grooved back-sight, border engraved flat bevelled lock decorated with gamebirds in a landscape at the stepped rounded tail and with a basket of foliage behind the rainproof pan, the latter with hinged sprung shield over the touch-hole, foliate engraved cock and roller, figured half-stock (some bruising) with unusually chequered grip and fore-end, cheek-piece, steel mounts engraved en suite with the breech and lock, comprising butt-plate with hinged ovoidal cover opening to reveal two cavities for cartridges, scroll trigger-guard with pineapple finial, vacant silver escutcheon, and foliate engraved silver fore-end cap (steel parts with some pitting), London proof marks

Anthony Farindon Biven is recorded as 'Manufacturer of breechloading rifle patented by Urbanus Sartoris' and had his business at 16 Regent Street between 1822 and 1825. The present gun incorporates Sartoris' British Patents of 11 March 1817 (No. 4107), and 23 January 1819 (No. 4336)
