An 18-Bore Flintlock Sporting Gun
Locked And Stocked By Bell, York, Mid-18th Century

With sighted barrel inlaid with rectangular brass-lined maker's name 'G. Massin' along the sighting flat and with three brass-lined stamps of the same maker at the breech, plain tang grooved for sighting, flat bevelled lock with stepped tail and signed within a rocaille, steel with roller bearing on the steel-spring, figured half-stock carved in relief with a shell behind the barrel tang, Liège steel mounts comprising side-plate pierced and chiselled with foliage centred on a vacant oval, crowned vacant escutcheon pierced and chiselled with foliage involving a grotesque mask beneath, butt-plate with foliate finial, and trigger-guard with moulded finials, dark horn fore-end cap, and later ramrod (steel parts with some wear and rust patination)
