A Rare Brass-Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss
By R. Silk Of London, Late 17th Century

With three-stage barrel flared at the muzzle, octagonal breech becoming polygonal and with a raised moulding at the rear, plain iron tang, signed border engraved rounded lock retained by two side-nails and engraved with strawberry foliage terminating in two monster-heads, rounded cock engraved en suite, artificially figured full stock (some minor worming, fore-end repaired), brass mounts comprising side-plate (probably replaced) formed as a scaled monster, thin butt-plate secured by iron tacks, later brass trigger-guard, and single baluster ramrod-pipe, and horn-tipped ramrod with iron worm (some wear overall), London proof marks and Silk's barrelsmith's marks

Footnotes

Robert I Silk was elected Master of the Gunmakers' Company in 1689, 1696 and 1700. He was Contractor to Ordnance, to the Hudson's Bay Company and the Africa Company. In 1689 he was appointed Chief Gunmaker, Tower of London and he died in 1701. Following his death the business was continued by his widow Mary until 1702
