A Persian Kilij, And A Persian Shamshir
Qajar, 19th Century

The first with finely watered slightly recurved blade (cutting-edge with nick) double-edged towards the point in front of the yelman and fullered over half its length on each side, the forte on both sides with a gold-damascened panel containing foliage and arabesques, the latter terminating in a bird's head, two-piece steel hilt retaining traces of silver-damascening and comprising pointed langets, downcurved quillons with stylised Makara-head terminals, and rounded grip and pommel; the second with single-edged blade fullered along the back over most of its length on each side and widening towards the point (extreme tip missing), hilt comprising quillon-block similar to the last, and rounded staghorn grips forming a beaked pommel (some light pitting overall) (2)
